We were watching a DVD of the Waltons the other day and it was the one when the gypsies were around and spent time camping at the Walton’s house.
John Walton was talking to the gypsy father and they were discussing the fact that the gypsy family would travel all over the place and never had a place to settle down and to call home.
The gypsy father said that home to them wasn’t about a building or a place, but it was about family, about the people around them.
This definitely got me thinking, home isn’t about the building we live in. Home isn’t the size of our house or how many bedrooms we have.
Home isn’t about how many acres we live on or how many bathrooms we have.
Home is about the people around us, the people we love.
A house is built of brick and stone a home is built of love alone.
So don’t put the value of your home on the building but on the people around you that you love, that is family.

You will find me linked up at some of these great blogs.
That is very true! A home isn’t the place but the people. I sure learned this through the years, going from big beautiful Victorian house–my dream house–to a bunk with my bio son in a homeless shelter for a month and every where in between. In the shelter, the size of the house didn’t matter, nor the amount of things in it. I chafe when I hear people say “I have to have this size house or else”….perceptions change when you don’t have a roof or walls to live in. I made that little bunk home for me and my son (also called “middle son” now on the blog–step kids are older and younger), until I could find a small apartment and get us on our feet and start life anew, and then made that little 1 bedroom apartment home, and then so on as we moved up in our accomodations. Now we are up to 5 people and a 4 bedroom farm house. Every place in between has been made a home somehow.
Thank you so much Angie for sharing this with us. You know exactly how this is because of all you have been through. I am so glad that God has led you through this and brought you to a much better place. We sometimes forget what is important in life and sometimes I think we are far too comfortable. We have had nice homes and not so nice in our renting journey but now we have a lovely home, not big to others but it is just right for us. Of course there are things we would change but we are content in knowing that God has blessed us and our family with this home and each other. Thanks again for stopping by and blessing us with your comment. Have a great week. Blessings
God is good and faithful Mrs. Abella. He has provided a home for us when we could not pay for one for ourselves also.
I am so glad Laura that God has blessed you with a home, He is so faithful and cares so much for all of us. Thanks for your encouraging comment. Blessings to you.
This is SO true…at the end of the day, all we really have is God and each other. Thank you for this gentle reminder. 🙂
Yes Cheryl you are so right, God and each other, what a blessing. Thanks for stopping by my friend. Blessings

Hey there Liz, thank you for stopping by and for your kind comment. Glad that you had the time to visit. have a great week. Blessings
Indeed, once we know and realize this, and take our focus off our possessions and things… and place our value on things that have eternal lasting weight, I’ve found that is when true lasting peace can be found! Wonderful thought today 🙂
You are so right MM, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and for stopping by. Blessings
So true. After a very difficult divorce, I lost the building that my children and I had called home. Fortunately, I have the most amazing family who surrounded us with love and kindness. Instead of feeling a loss I felt as if we had gained so much.
Hey Jessie, I am sorry for all that you have lost but so thankful for your amazing family. Thank you for sharing your heart with us and for stopping by. Blessings
This is so true. Several yeas ago we moved from my dream house (that we were renting) to a smaller house (that we bought). I miss the big house some days but have to remember that this is where God wants us and this house is a blessing to be made into a home.
Thank you so much Rose for sharing with us. Sometimes it is hard to stay focused on what God has for us, up against our own desires. Thanks again and have a great week. Blessings
So true! there’s something to be said about having roots, a place that’s familiar and known… but those places feel empty without people who feel familial and restful. Love it!
Thank you so much Syndal for sharing with us and for your encouraging comment. Family is definitely what makes a home. Blessings to you and welcome to Darling Downs Diaries.
We’ve lived in our house for seven years now and it hit me the other night that this is the longest I have ever lived anywhere. I love our house, but so much of that is because of the people I share it with and all the memories we have here. Our biggest thing is that our home is a safe place and sometimes it really feels that it is made of glass with all the people I have in and out since we are a foster family. God has blessed us with this place and even though sometimes it feels tight, our goal has been to make it a refuge. I love how our house has been able to provide a vehicle to develop relationships, but like you said, family is about far more than a place. Our rule is that whoever comes through our doors is family 🙂 and they’ll be family no matter where we go. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much Sara for sharing part of your life with us. What a blessing for the children who enter your home to know that they are family. What an amazing job you are doing. Blessings and have a great week. xxxx
Lovely words and so true! Would love for you to post on our Tuesday Talk! Have a wonderful week.
Thank you so much Michelle for your kind comment and invitation. Have a great week. Blessings
Absolutely true!
I was reminded of the verse: Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.
What He builds into a loving home has nothing to do with the physical structure!
Always enjoy reading your words!
You are so right Michele, and what a wonderful verse to add. Seems to me we try hard and in vain to build our homes around the wrong things. But you are right What God builds into our homes has nothing to do with the world. Thanks for stopping by, you are such a blessing to me. Have a great week. Blessings
Beautifully said! Some of the best memories I have of my family are the ones from this past year where we lived in a travel trailer in West Texas. It was the smallest place I’ve ever lived with these least amount of stuff and it was great. We have to travel a bit more than average and we tell our children (well, our daughter, because our son is only a year old and doesn’t get it yet) that home is wherever we are together. Period. Found you on the #CoffeeandConversation link up. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much Nicole for sharing with us. You are so right that home is wherever we are together. What a wonderful year you must have had in the trailer, I think sometimes all our stuff gets us caught up. Thanks for stopping by. Blessings
I love the new trend of tiny homes popping up everywhere. I could so do it if it were just my hubby and me. But, it is a thought-provoking concept to accept that we can certainly quit building our American dream mansions and be content with less. Less is more. This is the exact topic I posted about and we are currently in the process of downsizing right now! Building a smaller home. Happy blogging 🙂

Thank you so much Kassie for sharing with us and for your comment. It’s fascinating that we are thinking the same thing. Blessings
I couldn’t agree more and I love the Waltons.
Thank you so much for your comment. Blessings
Such a great reminder…. our homes are important… and keeping them functioning is a way to show love to our family… but the family is the reason we keep the home… and never would I choose the home over the family. 🙂
Thank you so much for stopping by and for your comment. I’m with you I would never choose our home over our family either, family is such a blessing. Thanks and blessings
Beautiful! Home is definitely not a building but who we carry in our heart. Have a blessed weekend!
Exactly Mary, thank you for your kind comment. Blessings to you this weekend.
Your story is well told, it is were the heart is!!

Blessings for you and your family!
Karren
Thank you so much Karren for your kind comment and for hosting such a great link up. Have a great weekend. Blessings
I remember that episode of The Waltons. What a good point made stressing the fact that family isn’t a place or building. It’s about the people. Thank you for sharing this reminder at WJIM’s Monday’s Musings.
Thanks Naomi for stopping by and commenting. We really enjoy the Waltons, although we don’t agree with everything the children do, it is a good show and so many lessons to be learnt. Thanks for hosting and have a great week. Blessings
I’ve taught my children the saying ” be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.” Now my 4 year old recites it when we return from a long day of activities and chores. Home truly is about the people who join you in it and whether grand or small the space is of little consequence. Thanks for sharing at #GiveMeGrace. You’re the Wordsmith of the Week!
That is wonderful Lisha and your daughter sounds so cute. You are so right, home is truly about the people. Blessings and thanks for hosting. Have a great week.
